After sending off shockwaves last week for creating a blatantly racist anti-black commercial, Shanghai Leishang Cosmetics— the company responsible for creating the infamous Qiaobi-brand laundry detergent advertisement—is now apologizing.
The commercial features an Asian woman literally stuffing a black man into a washing machine, after he expressed interest in her. After he was immersed for a “racial cleanse,” he emerged back again as a fair skin Asian man. And of course, the masses did not take this lightly. Here are some reactions from folks on Twitter expressing their distaste for the horrendous marketing visual that went very, very wrong.

Following the controversy and offense they ensued, here is part of the apology the company issued in a recent statement.
“We express regret that the ad should have caused a controversy,” the company’s statement reads. “But we will not shun responsibility for controversial content. We express our apology for the harm caused to the African people because of the spread of the ad and the over-amplification by the media….We sincerely hope the public and the media will not over-read it.”
Whether they apologized or not, it’s still unfortunate to see how white washed even ethnic media is; but also, how insensitive marketing campaigns can be putting black people and others of color at their disposal.
