Opponent: Foxy Brown
Cause: After years of tension between the two female MCs, Kim took a shot Fox Boogie on “Play Around,” a track from Lil’ Cease’s The Wonderful World of Cease A Leo, and followed it up with another diss on the title track from her second solo album, The Notorious K.I.M. (which also took a blatant shot at Shyne). Foxy responded with a scathing verse of her own on Capone-N-Noreaga’s 2001 hit, “Bang Bang.”
Outcome: As a result of Foxy’s response, a shooting occurred outside the Hot 97 studios in NYC in February 2001 when Kim was scheduled to appear on the radio station the same day as Capone. That incident eventually led to Kim going to prison when she refused to cooperate with authorities and tell them what she knew about the shooting.
Winner: Foxy’s “Bang Bang” diss was better—but she still hasn’t left the beef alone, attacking Kim on her 2009 track, “Off the Muscle,” and turning the beef into somewhat of a publicity stunt. Let’s call this one a draw.
Opponent: Remy Ma
Cause: At first, this seemed like a petty feud between two female rappers. But during a 2008 radio interview with Whoo Kid, Kim broke it down. “It all started when I got 5 mics [in The Source for 2005’s The Naked Truth],” she said. “She all on the radio talking reckless. ‘Fuck that, son, my shit hotter than hers.’ Come on, ma! This is what I do. Biggie crowned me Queen Bee and you can’t take that from me.”
Outcome: A year after getting released from prison, Kim tried to reclaim her crown by dropping a freestyle over 50 Cent’s “I Get Money” with several lines directed at Remy. But Remy shot back with the impressive “That Thing” freestyle over Lauryn Hill’s classic “Doo Wop (That Thing).”
Winner: Lyrically, Remy. She did it bringing up the long-standing urban legend that Lil Kim once had, um, you know pumped from her stomach and by showcasing her skills on the mic. But the subsequent shooting incident involving Remy cooked this beef and made it irrelevant to Remy’s career almost immediately.
