On Wednesday evening (April 12), news broke that Charlie Murphy lost his battle with leukemia. The famed comedian underwent a round of chemotherapy in a New York City hospital before he passed away. Fellow comedians swiftly shared their condolences on Murphy’s death and shared their fondest memories. One comedian who worked closely with Murphy also expressed his remorse, that being Dave Chappelle.
During John Mayer’s concert in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday night, Chappelle took to the stage to join a tribute to his Comedy Central brethren. Mayer played his melody, “You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me,” which Chappelle said reminded him of Murphy.
The 57-year-old’s family later issued a statement on their loved one’s passing, writing: “Our hearts are heavy with the loss today of our son, brother, father, uncle and friend Charlie. Charlie filled our family with love and laughter and there won’t be a day that goes by that his presence will not be missed. Thank you for the outpouring of condolences and prayers. We respectfully ask for privacy during this time of great loss for all of us.”
