Demi Lovato is breaking her silence for the first time since her reported drug overdose late last month. In a statement posted on Instagram Sunday (Aug. 5), Lovato expressed gratitude to fans for their support, and promised to “keep fighting” for her sobriety.
“I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction,” the statement begins. “What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not yet done.”
“I want to thank God for keeping me alive and well,” she continued. “To my fans. I am forever grateful for all of your love and support throughout this past week and beyond. Your positive thoughts and prayers have helped me navigate through this difficult time.”
Lovato goes on to thank her family, and the staff at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, who remained by her side during the medical emergency. “Without them I wouldn’t be here writing this letter to you all.”
In closing, the 25-year-old singer said that she’s taking “time to heal,” and focussing on sobriety. The former Disney star has reportedly agreed to enter rehab following her hospitalization.
Paramedics found Lovato unconscious in her Los Angeles-area home from a methamphetamine overdose, on July 24. Narcan, a medication that blocks the effects of opioids, was used to revive Lovato. Last week, a rep shared an update on behalf of Lovato and her family stating in part, “Some of the information being reported is incorrect and they respectfully ask for privacy and not speculation as her health and recovery is the most important thing right now.”
