Back in March, during a much-anticipated Comedy Central’s Roast of Justin Bieber, the Chicago native stole the stage with some deadpan one-liners that cut to the core of comedy-world politics: “They say that you roast the ones you love, but I don’t like you at all, man. I’m just here because it’s a real good opportunity for me.”
A seasoned regular on the stand-up circuit and on TV favorites like Comedy Central’s spitfire Broad City, Buress has a voice all his own. The first episode of his new show, Why? with Hannibal Buress comes out of the gates with a slew of industry cameos from Conan O’Brien to Amy Schumer. Part stand-up, part-sketch comedy, Why? with Hannibal Buress faces the bold and irreverent head on.
Buress confronts a troll (who turns out to be Schumer), auditions for Jon Stewart’s former gig (“I thought The Daily Show was a euphemism for once a week”) and throws a bizarre “Eighth of July” celebration—complete with revolutionary-era wigs and flute-bearing colonial cronies—to mark his independence from “not having a show.” Because well, “The Fourth of July is a big holiday for white Americans, not so much for black Americans, ‘cause in 1776 we went from being British property to American property. Not really a reason to set off fireworks…unless it was in your master’s face.”
Buress is the god of comedy chill, and Why? with Hannibal Buress—with its casual mix of political, absurd, and everyday observations delivered with Buress’ genius veneer of sleepy laissez-fair—is not to be missed.
