She may have Being Mary Jane down but being Gabrielle Union comes effortlessly. In Glamour magazine’s February 2014 issue, the BET star opened up about her relationship with Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade, admitting that her first impression of the three-time NBA champion wasn’t all that appealing.
Starting with his past relationship “résumé,” the 41-year-old actress said it “looked like crap: athlete, going through a divorce, nine years younger than me.” Wade’s baggage didn’t necessarily lead Union astray, especially after she called it quits with a fella who wasn’t acting right.
She continues, “Then, after I had a heart-crushing breaking with yet another immature jerk, I thought, it can’t be any worse if I date a fetus. Let’s just see what happens.”
The newly engaged couple’s bond is still going strong, despite Wade fathering a baby during a break in their relationship.
The Think Like A Man actress cited hectic work schedules for the temporary split. From filming her breakout BET show Being Mary Jane to shooting Think Like A Man Too in Vegas, Union said she couldn’t take time off, which hindered the quality time needed to maintain the connection.
“Over the summer, I reassessed priorities. I’d always wanted an awesome career with back-to-back projects, but I realized I wasn’t willing to sacrifice my relationship for it. Moving forward, I decided my work schedule has to make sense for our family,” Union said. “Bottom line: If an issue’s a deal breaker, it’s a deal breaker. If your relationship isn’t something you’re willing to give up and you can compromise, do so.”
