The Queen of Soul was the biggest honoree at this year’s American Music Awards. Gladys Knight, Ledisi, CeCe Winans closed out Tuesday’s (Oct. 9) ceremony with a soul-shifting tribute to the late Aretha Franklin, featuring some of her favorite gospel songs.
“I am so very honored to have known her since we were both little girls,” Knight told the audience. “She touched everybody with her music simply because she chose it with her heart, she didn’t choose anything she didn’t believe.
The singing legend led the tribute with “Amazing Grace,” a nod to Franklin’s gospel roots and her Grammy-winning album of the same name. Donnie McClurkin followed Knight’s performance along with Ledisi, Winans, and Mary Mary.
“Climbing Higher Mountains” and “How I Got Over,” was included in the set-list, both of which are featured on Franklin’s 1972 gospel album.
The tribute also included a photo reel of highlights in the Detroit native’s illustrious career. Franklin’s granddaughter was seen tearing up during the tribute. See video of the emotional moment below.
