Whoopi Goldberg is one of kind. The talented entertainer and businesswoman opened up about her personal life, specifically marriage. During a recent interview with New York Times Magazine, Goldberg laid out her thoughts on holy matrimony in a very honest way.
“I think I’m not that interested. I’m much happier on my own,” she said on Wednesday (Aug 31.) “I can spend as much time with somebody as I want to spend, but I’m not looking to be with somebody forever or live with someone. I don’t want somebody in my house.” Goldberg has been married three times–in 1973 to Alvin Martin, cinematographer David Claessen in 1986 and in 1994 Lyle Trachtenberg. She had her daughter Alexandrea Martin Dean with her first husband.
Goldberg says her thoughts on marriage have always been the same and perfectly explained why marriage doesn’t fit her life. “I’m the round peg, and marriage is the square hole. You can’t have a square hole, can you?” she said.
In 2014 during an interview with Oprah’s Master Class, the co-host of The View took a step away from the white dress after finding herself conforming to an idea she didn’t enjoy. “I thought if I made a structure to life that way, but I would feel more like everyone else,” she said. “It was good, but it wasn’t for me. I got this very strange and wonderful child out of it. I’m okay on my path. I like my path. I like not being able to explain myself constantly. You have to give and take in a relationship and I don’t have much to give these days [laughs.]”
Marriage might not be for Whoopi , but at least she’s honest. The legend will be joining Sara Hanes, Joy Behar, Candace Cameron Bure, Paula Faris and Raven-Symoné for the 20th season of The View Sept. 6, ABC.
