Legendary Bay Area rap group Hieroglyphics will be having their fifth annual Hiero Day in West Oakland on Monday, Sept. 5. There will be over 25 live performances on three stages –including Too $hort, Murs, Juvenile, Just Blaze, Asher Roth, and many more.
The annual event is an all day, all ages music festival that combines an outdoor festival, food, concerts, and a big block party to celebrate everything that is good about Oakland. There will be a lot to offer — like local vendors, street art, and plenty activities for the kids like bounce houses, face paintings, and more.
Beginning in 2012, Hiero Day took off after the success of the first event where former Oakland Mayor Jean Quan declared Sept. 3 as “Hiero Day” for their work in the community and made it into a holiday. According to group member Casual, Hiero Day began as an idea and blossomed into a full-fledged event after another fan mentioned how the day should be on Sept. 9 in homage to their hip-hop classic, “93 Till Infinity” — and wanted to teach others about The Hieroglyphics.
“We decided to make the date into an event and began contacting local business to put together a festival in Oakland. Five-years and hundreds of artists later, we are still hosting the premiere grassroots event in the Bay Area. The event has tripled in size since it’s conception and hopefully it will continue to be a landmark event for Bay Area Culture,” said Casual. Over time, as the event grew bigger and bigger, it was no longer free after the 2015 event in order to have a safer and more controlled environment. Tajai of Souls of Mischief says it became more organized and streamlined as Hiero Day became bigger and bigger.
“We expect to have an awesome, fun-filled event that has a ripple effect felt beyond just the day it happens. Not only have our fans consistently come out and supported us, but the artist and local business community have also come to bat for us for several years now,” said Tajai. “So we have been able to make this day an institution in Hip Hop and the Bay Area music scene. It is our hope to continue in this tradition for many years to come.”
Other artists who will be performing include Southern and Northern Cali staples like Dilated Peoples, Paris, Lyrics Born, and Young L (The Pack), among many other Hip-Hop, R&B, and Jazz, Electronic, and Alternative artists.
Hiero Day will be from 11AM until 7PM on 3rd and Chestnut in West Oakland. General admission is $19.93 while pit passes are $50.00 and VIP Access is $199.30 are for pre-sale only.
