Despite having sold 10 million albums, a Grammy, and his lyrics as the captions of everybody’s Instagram pictures, somehow Drake has never had a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. However, “Hotline Bling” might change that.
The song, which is currently sitting at the second spot on the chart, moved up from its third position this week and would be Drizzy’s first solo single to top the prestigious roster. According to the rapper, this feat would be the “biggest moment” of his career. Drake expounded on the significance of this accomplishment in a reflective Instagram post early Thursday morning (Oct. 15).
“I spend my life trying to make waves for the city I am from. No accolades really matter to me other than the fact that I have never had a billboard number one. If I get my first number one during the month of October it will be the biggest moment of my career to date (in my mind) and if you are looking for me on that particular evening I will be passed out in the water slide that connects to our pool. I love you and thank you for these memories. I always love the moment right before it happens more than when it actually happens. So thank you…even if it doesn’t,” he said.
In order to occupy the Billboard Hot 100’s top slot, the “Jumpman” rapper will have to bump his Canadian brother The Weeknd’s hit song “The Hills” off of the throne.
The Beauty Behind the Madness crooner made history last month when he became the first artist to snatch the top position from himself since Taylor Swift in 2014 and T.I. in 2008.
Of his back-to-back singles, The Weeknd was understandably excited. “WE STOLE THE NUMBER 1 SPOT FROM OURSELVES! XO DID THAT,” he shared on Twitter. “The Hills” is currently enjoying its fourth week at number one.
Though “Hotline Bling” will be Drake’s first time atop the chart by himself, five years ago, he shared the coveted position with Rihanna for their six-times platinum hit, “What’s My Name?” Alone, he came close back in 2009 with his first official single “Best I Ever Had” as it held down the No. 2 spot for four weeks.
Stay tuned to see if “Hotline Bling” takes the top spot when Billboard’s updated Hot 100 chart is released on Oct. 19.
