Houston Hip-Hop Artists Are Banking Black

Earlier this month, after the deaths of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, rapper Killer Mike urged Atlanta residents to hit the government where it hurts: in their wallet. More than 8,000 people took heed to Killer Mike’s advice to bank black and opened accounts with Citizens Trust Bank, accumulating nearly one million dollars. Now, hip-hop artists in Houston are progressing the movement.

Slim Thug, Paul Wall and Trae the Truth were reportedly among the dozens of H-town rappers that came together to open accounts at the only black-owned bank in Atlanta, Ga., Unity Trust. Their actions will signify a high-profile stance against gun violence and support for black-owned businesses.
