Breaking up is hard to do, especially when you were one-half of pop perfection like Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo. After their conscious uncoupling made headlines last week, the singers each broke their silence on the split after being together for three years.
Derulo recently sat down with Ryan Seacrest (Sept. 29), offering a deeper look into his ex-relationship.
“I’m not one to throw my business out on the street, but I thought it was important because things are getting a little out of hand,” he said of the rumors surrounding his breakup. “What happened… in a nutshell, there was a lot of tension in the relationship for a lot of different reasons… There was a lot of pressures of marriage. There was a lot of arguing and stuff like that that just weighed on our relationship over time. When you stop having more good times than bad bad times, it’s time to call it quits. It becomes something that is unhealthy.”
The 25-year-old “Talk Dirty” hitmaker added, “I think sometimes you can be in a relationship so long, it becomes a part of your life and you feel like you’re obligated. And when you start feeling obligated and you start feeling like it’s something you have to do because it’s necessary, like breathing, that’s not a good situation either. It should be something different.”
Meanwhile, the “No Air” chanteuse also said her piece during a recent appearance on The TODAY Show, but keeping a tighter lip.
“I’m good, actually,” she said. “The funny [thing] is that I read this book the other day. Actually, it was yesterday. It said when something unexpected happens in your life or you think something bad is happening, just say, ‘Plot twist’ and move on.”
Sound advice.
