Jordan Davis was just 17 years old when he was gunned down by Michael Dunn in 2012 in a dispute over hip-hop music. Today on what would have been his 21st birthday, supporters and activists paid tribute to the teenager.
Davis was at a Jacksonville, Fla., gas station with friends on Nov. 23 when they were approached by software developer Michael Dunn. After Dunn and the group exchanged words over the teen blasting “Beef” by Lil Reese, the 45-year-old fired ten shots towards the vehicle, fatally shooting Davis.
The case went to trial and gained national attention after Dunn referred to Davis as a “thug” for listening to rap music. He also defended firing his gun on the unarmed teens because he percieved them as a threat. Dunn was convicted on three counts of attempted murder for shooting at Davis’ friends (Tevin Thompson 18, Tommie Stornes, 20, and Leland Brunson, 18.) Following a mistrial, a second jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and Dunn was sentenced to 90 years plus life.
Davis’ parents Lucia McBath and Ron Davis have taken part in rallies and forums against stricter gun laws and equal rights for African-Americans. See what McBath and others had to say on what would’ve been Davis’ 21st birthday below.
