Three days after Jussie Smollett was attacked by two unidentified men in Chicago, Ill., the actor/singer is speaking out. In a statement to Essence, the 35-year-old reassured fans that he’s “OK” and that his “body is strong but my soul is stronger.” He also thanked those for their public support. Since news of his attack, Chicago’s law enforcement and the FBI have been working together to apprehend the suspects.
“I am working with authorities and have been 100% factual and consistent on every level,” Smollett said. “Despite my frustrations and deep concern with certain inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have been spread, I still believe that justice will be served.”
Initially, news reports stated that the Empire actor “refused” to give his phone to officers. TMZ reports when officers “informally asked” Smollett for his device to make certain that he was on the phone with his manager at the time of the attack, he reportedly became “uncomfortable” with that request, but is now willing to share phone records.
The “Chasing The Sky” singer also noted that the masses should turn their attention to other victims of hate crimes that are happening not only across the nation but in different corners of the world. “As my family stated, these types of cowardly attacks are happening to my sisters, brothers and non-gender conforming siblings daily. I am not and should not be looked upon as an isolated incident,” he said. “We will talk soon and I will address all details of this horrific incident, but I need a moment to process. Most importantly, during times of trauma, grief, and pain, there is still a responsibility to lead with love. It’s all I know. And that can’t be kicked out of me.”
