The Knicks are off to a good start this season – they beat the Miami Heat in their opener, but are now catching heat for a series of advertisements that have drawn complaints of sexism and misogyny. ESPN reports that MSG, the company that owns Madison Square Garden and the Knicks, has agreed to pull the ads off of New York City streets, due to their content.
The ads are certainly in-your-face. One says: “It’s Friday night. You can either go out and attempt to pick up sixes and sevens or stay home and watch [Knicks guard Jason] Kidd dish out dimes.”
Another alludes to the Broadway play “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark.” It says: “It’s Friday night. You can either see a Broadway harness malfunctioning or you can watch real men fly.”
The show was plagued by technical problems and cast member injuries.
The decision to post these ads in the first place was a head-scratcher. The Knicks had a bad enough public relations summer after giving up guard Jeremy Lin, but this is also a franchise that lost several sexual harassment cases in the last decade.
