In the nine years since Kim Kardashian and Ray J’s sex tape leaked online, we’ve since crowned several American Idol winners, launched Twitter and Instagram and elected our first black president. Yet it appears as if (some) people are still fascinated with the chess moves that turned what could’ve been a suicidal career decision into a glorious PR win launching the careers of the entire Kardashian-Jenner clan.
According to Page Six, Ian Halperin’s new book “Kardashian Dynasty” has the answer and claims it was momager Kris Jenner who “engineered” the tape’s release. In an excerpt from the book, Halperin alleges a former friend of Kardashian told him “It was Kris who engineered the deal behind the scenes, and was responsible for the tape seeing the light of day.”
Halperin then allegedly posed as a porn peddler to speak with a Vivid Entertainment spokesperson who said “when it comes to selling a sex tape…both parties need to sign off.” When asked how the Kardashian tape made its way online, the spokesperson replied “a third party brought it to Vivid .?.?. [We] got in touch with the Kardashian family.”
It’s unclear what are Halperin’s motives for writing the book, which comes out April 19, yet the Vivid Entertainment spokesperson told Halperin the celebrity sex tape would most likely leak anyway, and it would behoove the family to do business with the company in hopes for a payday.
“Why not work for us, and we’ll make sure that it will not only get out, but that it will be distributed the way you want.” The rep continued, “You’ll get a nice payment for it,” adding, “I can tell you right now. Kim Kardashian’s movie came out in ’07, and she’s made millions.”
