I think [organic collaborations] would happen more if the arena informed what’s provided for us to do so, and that’s why I gotta give it up to Kanye. To say, “Hey, look this is good for culture. This is good for art. This is what we’re supposed to be doing. We’re supposed to be putting all of our time together.” When I look at it, I liken it to one of my favorite Stevie Wonder records. Stevie Wonder, the Motown era, all the biggest people that really mattered, they were on records together. I mean, Michael Jackson singing background for Stevie Wonder? Singing background. Not even Stevie Wonder featuring Michael Jackson.
You can check the credits on “All I Do.” You hear Mike in there, [Starts singing] “All I do is think about you” You know what I mean? I’m like, Man this is amazing. It does happen but the forum has to be created for it to happen and you need somebody who’s enough of a curator, which is Kanye’s Good Friday presentation, that motivates and makes people excited about doing it and knowing that there’s gonna be a caliber of talent and a caliber of artistry and a caliber of respect in the room, where the outcome is really gonna be relevant and it’s gonna have some artistic integrity. —As told to Clover Hope
