Mariah Carey’s photo with Colin Kaepernick isn’t sitting well with a certain portion of her fanbase. Carey wrote on Instagram Friday (Nov. 16) that it was “such an honor” to meet Kaepernick, and while the majority of the reactions were positive, a bunch of angry white fans flooded her comment section with threats of boycotting her music and unfollowing her social media accounts.
Others tried to guilt trip Carey by expressing their “disappointment” over her support of Kaepernick. Naturally, Carey’s Instagram post also opened a debate about the American flag, racism and Donald Trump, with several of Carey’s fans defending and celebrating her praise of Kaepernick.
Carey met Kaepernick while at Hot 97 promoting her new album, Caution. The 31-year-old athlete reposted Carey’s photo writing back, “It was an honor to meet an icon.”
Kapernick, who launched the Know Your Rights campaign in an effort to continue his social activism, has garnered the support of several musicians, politicians, fellow athletes and more.
