Drake‘s Scorpion was one of the biggest selling albums of the year, and it wasn’t short on the supply of samples throughout the double-disc LP.
One of its songs, “Emotionless,” featured an obscure sample of Mariah Carey‘s 1991 song, “Emotions.” During a conversation with Genius for their “Genius Level” series, the Caution musician discussed how she first heard the sample and song.
“Well, I heard (‘Emotionless’) over the phone at first, and I was like, ‘Oh I’m sure they’re gonna speed it up, because of the Lauryn [Hill] ‘Nice For What…’ This is probably a little snippet of what they’re gonna do.”
After she realized that much of her hit was featured in the song, she noted she was very satisfied.
“I’m so glad they liked it,” she smiled. “I was very flattered by it.”
When asked what Drake song she’d interpolate into one of her future hits, she said she had some interest in using one of his biggest viral hits.
“I would use ‘Back To Back’!” she laughed, as the audience cheered. However, she said that now that she’s put it out into the universe, someone now may steal her idea.
“And now somebody’s gonna use that, and now it’s foiled!” she laughed.
