Earlier this year, a version of Drake’s “Controlla” melody featuring Popcaan surfaced. The yet-to-be-mastered version made its rounds on the Internet and left listeners vying for the finished product on Drizzy’s Views album. But when the tracklist appeared, it showed no signs of featuring Popcaan, and thus his verse wasn’t featured on the album.
Just like many fans who were upset that Popcaan’s presence on “Controlla” was non-existent, a pioneering Dancehall artist shared those same sentiments. Mr. Vegas conducted an 8-minute rant on why he thinks Drake is profiting off Dancehall or Reggae artists by not given them the proper credit. The “Heads High” artist also feels that Drake uses other musicians as “intro men,” which he described as “a person that used to stand up at the studio and hype up the record before the real artist got on the record.”
Mr. Vegas then thought he would hear Popcaan on the following song “Too Good,” which features Rihanna. But, “at the end of the record, again, is another sample and the sample is from Popcaan. An old Popcaan record Drake took another sample.”
He then stated that no Jamaican artists were credited on Views, and that Drake sees that the Dancehall genre is what listeners are gravitating towards. “Does Drake really love dancehall or Drake is just fake and because he sees dancehall right now is the hottest genre, he use 40 or 50 percent dancehall on this album, because he realize that this is the hot thing right now?”
