There’s a lot going on here. Cadbury’s ads for its three new flavors of Bliss came out last week with the tagline “Move over Naomi, there’s a new diva in town.” Somehow, Naomi Campbell felt that the name calling was hurtful and not funny. In her world, the ad is Cadbury’s way of calling her chocolate: “It’s upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me, but for all black women and black people,” she said.
Meanwhile, her mother told The Independent, “I’m deeply upset by this racist advert. Do these people think they can insult black people and we just take it? This is the 21st century, not the 1950s. Shame on Cadbury.”
Um, we’re confused. Sounds to us like Cadbury was literally talking about divas, not chocolate, in clever advertising lingo. And since when was describing a brown skin woman as “chocolate” derogatory anyway?
