While talking with team general manager Craig MacTavish, the 24-year veteran coach was let go. This was Krueger’s first year as the Oilers coach and apparently the first time any coach for a professional sports has been fired via Skype.
At this end of the season, the Canadian team had come in 12th place overall and failed to make the playoffs.
“This past Thursday he requested that I accept him on Skype so he could Skype me,” Krueger said. “When the conversation began he got right to the message that he felt it was necessary to hire a new head coach. That’s the way it went. The conversation was short.”
Krueger also said “I’d never been fired in 24 years as a hockey coach, and it was the first time I’d had a conversation with Craig MacTavish by Skype.”
He plans to take some time off while he fields offers from European teams.
