After gracing the Golden Globes with a speech so riveting it sparked presidential rumors, Oprah proved once again to be everyone’s favorite rich aunty as she announced that her acclaimed Oprah’s Masters Class will be making its return with a Martin Luther King, Jr. themed episode.
The news of Oprah’s commemorative episode comes on Friday (Jan. 12) as promotional clips for series show Winfrey sitting with Congressman John Lewis – a civil rights leader and close friend of Dr. King. – With the airing of this episode, the show will enter its sixth season making it one of the longest-running programs on Oprah’s OWN network, and with clips of Congressman Lewis surfacing where he speaks on everything from MLK’s humorous side and the current fight for racial equality, the season premiere looks to be on par with the Emmy winning episodes of the past.
While it is doubtful Oprah will ever run for president, by using her platform to shine a light on notable figures like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. or more obscure but just as impactful people such as Recy Taylor, one might argue that Oprah is flexing an influence that is deeper than politics.
