Vocalist for the 1966 classic “When A Man Loves A Woman,” Percy Sledge, died early this morning due to natural causes while under clinical care in Baton Rogue, LA, the Associated Press reports.
The 73-year-old singer, who earned Atlanta Records its first gold record, drew inspiration from an ex-girlfriend, who left him to pursue her own career. Sledge was later admitted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. His other works include “Warm and Tender Love,” ”It Tears Me Up,” and Take Time to Know Her.”
Multiple source report that Sledge suffered from liver cancer but underwent surgery in January 2014. Whether this had any connection to his death is unknown.
