Weslyn “Mama Wes” Monroe, the mother of the late rapper Pimp C, passed away in his hometown Port Arthur, Texas, allegedly due to serious illness Monday morning (August 19), the Houston Press reports. She was 66.
Bun B, who comprised UGK alongside Pimp C, announced the unfortunate news on Instagram.
“Thanks to everyone that has sent prayers and condolences,” said Bun. “She was a great woman. Nurture us from boys to men and made us strong enough to handle this industry. She was the one that kept us going when we didn’t wanna go anymore. She was the backbone of UGK, the definition of loyalty, the personification of unconditional love and the essence of what being Trill really meant. She’s finally reunited with her son. God bless you both. RIP Mama Wes. You gave everything to make us Underground Kings.”
Playing a significant role in Pimp C’s music career and estate following his death, Mama Wes was present at a celebration honoring UGK’s induction into the Museum of the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame last December in December 2012 in Texas.
Mama Wes reportedly spent her last days in a Port Arthur hospital. This coming December will mark the sixth year death anniversary since Pimp C’s passing from an overdose and sleep condition.–Andrew Asare
