Disgraced football star Plaxico Burress has been shipped to the Fishkill Correctional Facility, beginning his two-year stint in the slammer yesterday.
The former New York Giants receiver was sentenced Tuesday on one count of attempted criminal possession of a weapon after being indicted on two counts of weapons possession and one count of reckless endangerment.
The conviction stems from an incident in November at Latin Quarter nightclub in Manhattan, where Burress accidentally shot himself in the thigh. He was not licensed to carry a concealed weapon.
Yesterday, Burress spent time at Rikers Island prison. According to TMZ, the football star had no cellmate at the jail, his meals were delivered, and he was given his own shower.
On Wednesday morning, Reverend Al Sharpton expressed his outrage over the two-year-sentence Burress received.
“I think it is an unusually harsh sentence for someone who was his own victim. He should be punished but his sentence is way out of proportion with the crime,” Sharpton argued.
“Celebrities should not be given special treatment but they should not be given exceptional punishments either.”
After a few months at Fishkill, Burress is expected to move to another facility to serve out the rest of his sentence. –Linda Hobbs
