After a glowing night at the Academy Awards on Sunday (March 7), Stern called the 26-year-old Brooklyn actress “the most enormous, fat, black, chick” on his Sirius Satellite radio show.
Although his taunts earned much criticism, Stern refused to apologize or back down, and said later on his show stated, “I did enjoy her performance. I have nothing against her, but the fact is, I’m just trying to say she’s enormous. The girl’s got tremendous problems, and she needs help. That’s all.”
Sidibe’s mother, Alice Tan Ridley, responded to Stern on an episode of Inside Edition.
“He can see, you can see, I can see Gabby is a big girl. She’s a big woman, so what’s wrong with that? She’s not like everyone else in the world? I don’t see giving jobs out to anybody so why should we care what he says? He might not hire her, but someone else will.”
Ridley added that she hopes her daughter brushed off Stern’s remarks. “You’re going to be who you are no matter what anyone has to say about it,” said Ridley. “They didn’t make you, don’t let them break you.”
Sidibe has already been tapped to co-star in the Showtime comedy The Big C and can also be seen in the upcoming film, Yelling to the Sky. —Linda Hobbs
