A few public school teachers might be out of a job after being photographed wearing gray NYPD T-shirts, despite being explicitly told not to.
The Union Federation of Teachers warned the educators not to wear “inappropriate apparell” on the first day of school. Ignoring the rules put in place by the UFT, many New York public school teachers showed their support for the NYPD in the wake of the Eric Garner death and in protest to the union-backed rally by Rev. Al Sharpton.
Teacher on Staten Island at IS72 showed their solidarity for police and the photo pictured above is from Public School 220 in Queens, where 20 teachers wore the T-shirts to also show their support.
In an email sent Wednesday night , the UFT advised teachers not to wear any clothing that may be deemed insensitive.
“As public employees, one must remain objective at all times. Certain T-shirt messages may appear to be supportive, but individuals (parents, students) may see a different meaning in that message.”
UFT Chapter Leader at PS 44 in Mariners Harbor Cindi Panarella called the union’s action “crazy.”
“The UFT contract specifically says there is no dress code. They can’t tell us what to wear,” she said.
Whether you think its crazy or not. If your superiors tells you NOT to wear certain attire, you don’t wear certain attire. Period!
