Monday night (Jul. 11), VH1’s “Hip Hop Honors” paid tribute to the queens of hip-hop. The honorees included the top tier from Missy Elliot, Lil Kim, Queen Latifah, to the legendary Salt-N-Pepa feat. DJ Spinderella. The performances were made up of a compilation of insanely talented artists like Teyana Taylor, French Montana, Eve, Nelly Furtado and many more. Even the First Lady Michelle Obama gave the MCs huge shoutouts last night.
Queen Latifah specifically had her own message to send to the audience in regards to the state of black people in the world right now. During her acceptance speech she said, “We all know that the world and our world is really tense right now. It’s a lot of tension. It’s a lot of angst. It’s a lot of hurt. A lot of pain. I’m hoping that we can somehow manage to channel all of these emotions that we have in a positive way and really do something to change our world.”
The movement was in the building last night with the Black Lives Matter founders opening up the show stating frankly and emotionally, “This movement is grounded in black peoples’ dignity, justice and freedom. It’s about love, not violence.”
As this movement continues to grow and plans continue the progression of black people, please remember that it is important to keep your head up and heart clear, and know that it is okay to take your attention away from the horrific tragedies and focus on something great.
