Red Bull is exploring Asia’s budding hip-hop scene in a new documentary. Asia Rising – The Next Generation of Hip-Hop premiered on Friday (Mar. 29), offering a new perspective into the unique sub-culture.
Produced in partnership with 88rising, the new doc steps into the world of six diverse artists who are at the forefront of the expanding movement. The artists in the film – Rich Brian (Indonesia), Higher Brothers (China), Keith Ape (South Korea), Awich (Okinawa), Suboi (Vietnam), and Jin Dogg (Japan) – share their own stories and show the parallels between the eastern and western cultures.
The documentary also includes guest appearances from notable U.S. and Asian artists like Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah and Joji, who was the first Asian artist to top the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart.
“Our mission at 88rising is to change the game for how Asian culture is perceived in the West, which we do by giving these incredible artists the platform to express themselves through their music,” 88rising founder Sean Miyasharo said. “Teaming up with Red Bull to make Asia Rising was an easy choice for us. They gave us an opportunity to tell this story in a really intimate way and share it with a wider audience. It’s all about pushing culture forward, and with Red Bull and the documentary we’re able to give the movement an even bigger impact.”
Asia Rising – The Next Generation of Hip-Hop is now available to stream on Red Bull’s YouTube channel and Red Bull TV. Watch it in the video above.
