Rarely do artists get invited back to the Coachella stage two years in a row. Performers need to embody something extra special to receive the honor back to back. For hip-hop duo Run The Jewels, the call was one that came unexpectedly, but met with open arms — and show-stopping ideas.
RTJ started their Saturday (Apr 16) concert on the Coachella main stage — they were at a smaller stage in 2015 — like no one else in the California festival’s history. A presidential candidate introduced the fellas in a video message where he showed his full support for Killer Mike and El-P.
“One of the highlights of running for president over the course of this last year has been getting to know Killer Mike,” said Bernie in the video. “His depth of passion, his knowledge and commitment to community is an inspiration to me and I value his friendship immensely.” El-P, keep up the great work and let’s get to know each other better in the months to come.”
The senator and Mike became great friends this past year and continue to show each other love at every possible moment. Bernie may not be down to join the RTJ moshpits, but if he becomes president, don’t be shocked to see Killer Mike as a frequent White House visitor if he gets elected.
But the surprise guests didn’t stop there. Fans were also treated to a cameo from Gangsta Boo, who came through for “Love Again (Akinyele Back).” And, New York City’s Despot joined the crew for their collaboration, “Blockbuster Night Pt. 2.” Gary Clark Jr. also came through for a guitar solo after “Angel Duster.”
However, things came to a high when Nas stepped out from the shadows to the drums of his crowd favorite, “Made You Look.” As one of the group’s biggest supporters, the Queensbridge legend rocked his verse from track and then declared Run The Jewels as his “favorite group.”
Now that’s how you end a Coachella performance.
