Brooklyn based experimental beatsmith Safety Scissors (Matthew Curry) is back and on an upswing. Recently signed to BPitch Control, Curry will be releasing his third album, In A Manner Of Sleeping, and performing live in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York over the next few weeks.
Appropriately enough, In A Manner of Sleeping is a dreamy mix of quirky house beats and romantic pop songwriting that Matt has been refining since starting out in 2000 in San Francisco, where kindred electronic pranksters Matmos and Kid 606 helped shape his early sound. His last album, 2005’s Tainted Lunch, hinted at Curry’s emerging synth- pop persona, reminiscent of lo-fi dandies like Daedalus or nu-disco savants like Kelley Polar. Over a string of remixes for indie stars like Grizzly Bear and Architecture in Helsinki, as well as festival appearances, Curry has established himself as one of the most intriguing characters playing–and playing with–dance music today.
Safety Scissors’ string of U.S. gigs kicks off tonight (Friday, May 24) at a BPC Showcase at secret location in Brooklyn. Classically-trained former grunge rocker turned minimal techno star Camea and Parisian melodic house master Thomas Muller will also be spinning, along with label boss and all-around bad ass Ellen Allien. Vibe will be there to soak it all up. Get at us if you will too. To get a sense of what we’re in for, check the banging, dark and stormy unreleased Alland Byallo remix Safety Scissors’ “Progress and Preserverance” below.
In A Manner Of Sleeping is out on BPitch Control on June 11th.
