Illuminati. The word itself has become one of the most prominent and contentious topics in hip-hop right now. And with today’s path builders feeling the gaze of scrutinizing eyes from both the public and media, it seems no rapper is safe from being blighted by the title – just ask Lupe Fiasco.
Earlier this year, the leader of the L.A.S.E.R.S. movement sat down with DJ Whoo Kidd for an interview discussing his ideologies surrounding the controversy. During the sit-down, Whoo Kidd reminisced on and relayed a story where he was mistaken as a member of the hierarchy solely due to his affiliation with G-Unit. When asked if that sort of accidental stigma scared him, here’s what Lupe had to say:
“Nah, ‘cause at the end of the day, it’s about power and control. You know, they control the world, you know what I’m sayin’? It’s already there; it’s just a matter of people wanting to be aware of it, make a game out of it, do whatever. It’s just people wanna know what’s goin’ on in the age of knowledge right now. It’s all about trying to figure out what’s what.”
Along with the illuminati and the industry, Lupe discusses the backlash following his album’s constant pushbacks and even discloses details about a book club he started in order to raise awareness for literacy. You can watch the interview in its entirety by pressing play below. — Stephanie Long
