Beyoncé lit up the stage with her surprise performance of “Freedom” featuring Kendrick Lamar at the BET Awards this past Sunday (June 26). But once the performance was over, Beyoncé was nowhere to be found. The icon was nominated in five categories, and awarded the “Coca-Cola Viewer’s Choice Award” for her song, “Formation” in which her mother, Tina Knowles Lawson got up and accepted the award on her behalf with class, beauty, and an awkward acceptance speech.
“On behalf of my beautiful daughter, who is on a plane — she had to run straight from the stage and get on the plane and fly to London for a concert,” she said. “Hopefully she’ll make it in time. But that’s how important this awards show was for her to show up.”
The Beyhive immediately called bluff when they noticed that her London tour wasn’t her next stop. The tour Ms. Tina meant to say was in northeast England, Sunderland, that isn’t until two nights later on Tuesday (June 28). The following day, Tina Knowles went to her Instagram to explain that it was an honest mistake and that she’s disappointed to be receiving backlash.
“I just got a wind of the mess that has festered since last night! The fact that I supposedly lied about my Daughters concert. First of all I did make a mistake on the city and the day,” she said. “I asked why did she have to leave early and was told by a member of her staff that ‘she had to get back in time for her concert’ and that she actually should have been there 2 days before, as the tour has been down for a month I assumed the date was Monday and the city was London well it turned out to be in the Uk but wrong city and on Tuesday. I want to point out that there is a nine hour time difference and it is an eleven to 12 hour Flight that equates to 19-20 hrs to get there!”
Ms. Tina is not here for the haters. One thing is for sure, Beyoncé walked away with Video of the Year, Viewer’s Choice Award, Centric Award, and Best Female R&B/Pop Artist reminding everyone that, she’s still the Queen… no matter where she goes.
