In his first interview since a deadly, six-vehicle car crash that claimed the life of his close friend James McNair last June, Tracy Morgan detailed his current physical and emotional condition. Sharing his challenging road to recovery, the comedian gave an emotional account on the Today show.
“I’ve been down. I have my family, my wife, Megan – we’re about to be married – and my daughter and my son,” he told Matt Lauer. “So they keep my spirits up […] The case is settled, but the pain is always gonna be there for Jimmy Mack. He was a close friend of mine, a comrade in comedy, he was a loving man. He was a warm man. He was a good man, and it just hurts me to see that he’s gone. That’s it.”

Morgan also recalled his final memory with McNair during the comedy show appearance they attended just hours before the crash. Sharing that McNair wrote a joke for him and was invited to watch the performance, Morgan remembered looking over and watching his friend laugh in the final moments he was alive. The comedian also commended Walmart for taking responsibility for the crash and taking care of McNair’s family.
Noting that he is still experiencing complications from the severe head trauma he suffered in the crash, Morgan said that he experiences headaches and nosebleeds. Despite his uphill battle ahead, however, he vowed to make a return to what he loves.
“I love comedy, I’ll never stop loving her. I can’t wait to get back to her,” he said. “But my goal now is just to heal. I’ll get back to making you laugh, I promise you.”
