UC Berkeley gives students enrolled at their institution the opportunity to propose and teach classes, and it looks like the college’s pupils are in for a musical treat for the upcoming fall semester.
Student Preya Gill recently announced that her proposal for a course centered on Frank Ocean has been approved by the school. According to reports, the course will be called “Brain Like Berkeley,” which is a beautifully ironic nod to the Blonde musician’s song, “Novacane.” Gill and fellow student Deborah Chang compiled the idea after being paired as roommates and bonding over Ocean’s music, and will teach the course.
“Brain Like Berkeley” will explore the “artistic history, upbringing, background, musical influences, artist identity, and the way [Ocean] challenges dominant social concepts such as toxic-masculinity and gender politics.”
“We want to encourage a deep literary exploration of his artistry both in lyrics and through his visuals and live performances. We hope to provide a safe environment where students can discuss his poetry and music with sensitivity, creative respect, and open-mindedness,” the pair writes.
Even better? Gill revealed via social media that Ocean’s mother approves of the course. UC Berkeley students can sign up for the course in August on the school’s website.
