A major highway bridge collapsed in Washington State last night around 7:30PM. The Interstate 5 bridge crumbled into the Skagit River. Authorities believe an oversized truck hit part of the bridge. The Washington State Patrol were first on the scene.
Three people were rescued from the water after two other vehicles fell into the chilly river with the debris. The driver of the semi truck made it across as the bridge fell behind him. All three victims of the accident are said to be recovering in local hospitals.
“We don’t think anyone else went into the water,” said Marcus Deyerin, a spokesman for the Northwest Washington Incident Management Team. “At this point we’re optimistic.”
The I-5 bridge serves as the main gateway from Seattle to Canada. Now that route is completely blocked until authorities can make the necessary repairs.
The driver remained on scene and is said to be cooperating with police. A spokesperson for the Washington State Patrol would not say if he will be facing charges.
