The Los Angeles natives met up with VIBE in a downtown LA rooftop penthouse to shoot the ‘Big List’ cover. Kendrick Lamar arrived first and chopped it up with the photographers and VIBE crew, rapping along to music and having a good time during his snapshots. Miguel then joined him for a few together before doing it alone for our lensmen, Steven Geomillion and Dennis Leupold. The sun set during Miguel’s shoot, providing for a sexy mood that goes in tow with his own music.
In their cover story, the two “new classics” dish on their first impressions of one another, Frank Ocean’s ‘coming out’ announcement and what they want to accomplish in both rap and R&B in the future.
“Kendrick is poised to be the next staple in hip-hop,” Miguel tell VIBE’s John Kennedy, “and I certainly intend on becoming that for R&B, working my ass off and taking risks.”
“Definitely,” adds K. Dot. “The biggest goal is to say, ‘Damn, we did it.’ Think about Jay-Z and R. Kelly and everything they accomplished. I don’t know if they’re on talking terms now, but I’m sure they’d say, “Damn, we did it,” 20 years down the line. That’s the ultimate high—to accomplish what you sought after, just like those two did.”
