Cee-Lo Green stopped by 105.1’s Breakfast club to discuss a wealth of topics: Andre 3000 being hurt by his comments about stage fright, being a judge on “The Voice”, defending himself from rape allegations, filming the Goodie Mob reality show, and more. He also reveals that he’s working on a new solo project while Dangermouse has been working on a U2 album, but the two have been talking about possibly doing a new Gnarls Barkley project.
When asked about the BET Hip-Hop Awards, Cee-Lo had something to say about rappers who aren’t taking the art form seriously these days. He cites Jay-Z’s nonchalant approach to rapping as hustling as an example of rappers being uninspired and corrupting the genre today.
Cee-Lo also mentions Goodie Mob’s first record deal with LaFace under L.A. Reid and Pebbles. It was the group’s first record deal and they had no knowledge of the music industry, so Reid was willing to give them creative freedom and they bit at the first opportunity. They just had no idea what the contract entailed. The royalties were shady and Goodie Mob ended up getting stilted, but Cee-Lo still respects L.A. for giving them their first shot and paying for his mother’s funeral during the release of Soul Food.
Finally, Green talks about current artists that he’s feeling: Chance the Rapper, A$AP Ferg, Kendrick Lamar, and Loaded Lux are some of the names that he mentions. Drake comes up, but Cee-Lo has “definitely gotta be in the mood” for his music.
