HBO Sports revisits rival junior welterweights Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward during their most rememberable 9th round drag-out fight. Between Nov. 23, 2002 and June 7, 2003, the fighters met three times in the ring. Within those 13 months, the throwback sluggers fought a total of 30 rounds against one another. While Ward won the first fight, Gatti would be triumphant in the following two bouts. While the documentary looks back at the fights, it also follows Ward this past June to Canastota, NY for Gatti’s posthumous induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
“2013 marks the tenth anniversary of the third fight of the landmark Gatti vs. Ward trilogy, so now is the ideal moment to revisit this classic rivalry,” says Ken Hershman, president, HBO Sports. “This retrospective will offer new perspectives and deliver revealing insights on the two ring warriors who produced this all-time great moment in boxing history.
Legendary Nights: The Tale of Gatti-Ward, part of HBO’s Legendary Nights boxing documentary series, debuts Sat., Oct. 19 at midnight on HBO following the Mike Alvarado vs. Ruslan Provodnikov fight.
