Herbie Hancock, Martina Arroyo, Shirley MacLaine, Billy Joel and Carlos Santana were among those inducted on Dec. 8 at the 36th Annual Kennedy Center Honors for their exemplary lifetime achievement in the performing arts. The ceremony, which originally aired on CBS and was attended by the President and First Lady, included tributes to each of the honorees.
For Hancock’s tribute, Snoop Dogg came out to his own remix of Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island.” Snoop played off Us3’s hit Hancock-sampling “Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)” and melded the track with his own “Gin & Juice.” He even got the crowd of politicians and artists to do some “heys” and “hos.” Hancock seemed to enjoy the number whole-heartedly.
“Herbie, you know we love you , baby!” Snoop said in his shout out. “Thank you for creating hip-hop!”
