For some, this weekend will be filled with a little family gathering, some church-going, and maybe even a good ol’ Sunday dinner. But if you do indeed find yourself twiddling your thumbs with too much free time on a day off, there are plenty of ways to make the most of it. From new music, to basketball, to ratchet television, here’s What You Should Be Doing This Weekend. — Iyana Robertson
1. Bumping Illmatic
Today (Apr. 19) marks 20 since Nas’ debut classic released back in 1994. If you didn’t cop the Illmatic XX re-release, or see the Time Is Illmatic documentary at Tribeca, have no fear. You can still commemorate the legendary MC buy just giving Illmatic a couple of spins this weekend — even if you still do so regularly.
2. Catching the NBA Playoffs
The race to the Larry O’Brien trophy begins this weekend, with the Eastern and Western conference’s best 8 teams facing off this Saturday (Apr. 19) and Sunday (Apr. 20). The action starts at midday and continues until late night, so there are plenty of chances to peep a game. Check out the schedules here.
3. Checking out August Alsina’s Testimony
if you have yet to lend your ear to R&B newcomer August Alsina’s debut album Testimony, this weekend may be good time to play catch up. Featuring the smash “I Luv This Shit,” and his new joint “Get Ya Money” featuring Fabolous, singing meets the streets on the young firecracker’s first offering.
4. Watching the Mad Men Season 7 premiere
Judging by its season premiere night’s (Apr. 13) ratings, more than a few fans missed out on the start of Mad Men’s seventh and final season. If you still care about the life of Don Draper, backtrack to the premiere before the second episode hits AMC on Sunday night (Apr. 20).
5. Going to see A Haunted House 2
Marlon Wayans is sure to pile on the ridiculousness with his Haunted House follow-up. Hitting theaters yesterday (Apr. 18), the sequel finds Wayans character in yet another not-so-scary but funny-as-hell situation. Hit up the trailer, watch the original, then take a trip to see Haunted House 2 — and “lol” the whole time.
6. Copping that pair of J’s you missed out on
Missed out on those “Gamma Blue” 11s? How about those “Taxi” 12s? Well, this weekend is the sneakerhead’s chance at redemption, with Eastbay, Footlocker, Finish Line and Villa are all holding a major restock on popular retro Air Jordan kicks, also including the “Bred” 1s and the “Laney” 5s. Get yours.
7. Re-watching Love & Hip-Hop Atlanta
With Mimi Faust rocking social network timelines following the news of her sextape, now may be a good time to backtrack and find the moment she turned Kardashian. A bit confused about where it all went south (no pun intended)? Relive her VH1 episodes to try and make sense of it all.
8. Prepare for the return of The Boondocks
Huey, Riley and Granddad will be returning to Adult Swim this coming Monday (Aug. 21) for its final season. And after four years since its last airing, it may be high-time for a good ‘ol catch-up. The new season features Granddad’s revelation that the family has gone broke, and an ode to Breaking Bad. Watch old episodes and check out the Season 4 trailer here.
9. Watching the Coachella 2014 live stream
Weekend one of this year’s Coachella Music and Arts festival boasted Outkast’s return to the stage, a joint performance by Nas and Jay Z, a sisterly two step by Beyonce and Solange, and a Pharrell set featuring Snoop Dogg and Gwen Stefani. Do you really want to miss this weekend? Watch all the action here.
10. Getting familiar with Orange Is The New Black
If you were not sure what the big deal was when the Orange Is The New Black season two trailer dropped yesterday, now is the time to get your life. Grab a seat and somebody’s Netflix password and watch (no, binge-watch) the first season. Get back to us once you’re done.
11. Seeing why Porsha Stewart was arrested
Porsha Stewarts flawless mugshot photo was apparently the result of a brawl that took place on the Real Housewives Of Atlanta reunion special. That special airs this Sunday if you’re interested in how it all goes down.
