In the year of remakes, 1991’s New Jack City is the latest film to be added to the chatter. According to Deadline, Warner Bros plans to helm the cult classic. The Mario Van Peebles-directed movie stars Ice-T, Chris Rock, Allen Payne, and Wesley Snipes in the leading role.
In an interview with Shadow & Act, Snipes shared his thoughts on the remake, which will be penned by Snowfall‘s Malcolm M. Mays, by noting that he’s not “associated with it” and since it’s a classic film, he believes it “should be left alone.”
“And the story was built around things that are current. I don’t particularly like the idea of recreating the drug culture,” Snipes said. “…I don’t know. They actually talked to me about doing it and I told them no. If I had a dime for every time I’ve said no. It’s a done deal, it’s a wrap.”
As Nino Brown, Snipes’ character ran a gang called the Cash Money Brothers. The group took command of selling cocaine and other drugs set in ’80s New York City. The empire eventually crumbles through an intense police investigation that ran deeper than solving crimes.
