A woman from St. Louis has been fired from her job after a video of her blocking a black man from his apartment because she was “uncomfortable” went viral.
“It’s my building as well…excuse me,” D’Arreion Toles said to the as-of-now unidentified woman in the video, who repeatedly asked him what unit he lived in. The video has been see over 6 million times and shared over 10,000 times.
“The Tribeca-STL family is a minority-owned company that consists of employees and residents from many racial backgrounds,” the statement from the woman’s employer read. According to ABC News, Tribeca-STL manages real estate properties. “We are proud of this fact and do not and never will stand for racism or racial profiling at our company.”
The woman’s estranged husband, who is a man of color, took to Facebook to comment on the video.
“As a man of color I have spent most of my professional career teaching others the importance of diversity and inclusion,” he said. “[My hope is to] not allow others ignorance to incite anger and hatred, but to use it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and promote love.”
“I live here, I don’t like the fact that you have your phone in my face,” the woman said in the now viral video. “If you wanna come into my building…you walked up on a street…can you show me the key code into this building?”
In the video, Toles said he lived on the fourth floor while trying to push his way past the woman. After entering the building, the woman persisted to follow him into the elevator and changed her story to reflect that she wanted to “meet him” since he’s a neighbor.
