Will Smith provided fans with an insane amount of joy Wednesday (Oct. 10) when he confirmed his role as the Genie and the release date of the live action version of Aladdin.
Directed by Guy Ritchie, Smith will take on the role originally played by the late Robin Williams in the 1992 animated film. Smith has shared behind the scenes photos of the cast as early as last September 2017 on Facebook, but things fell between the cracks because the internet. What does have everyone’s attention is the poster Smith shared on Instagram with the film’s presumed release month of May.
Earlier this summer, Disney provided footage of Smith’s take on the Genie at CinemaCon. Cinema Blend reported Smith’s version of the Genie is very similar to the actor’s normal image paired with a long ponytail/shaved head combo. He also dons drag threads in between wearing the traditional Genie fits like vests, scarves and “billowy Genie pants.”
“The character was described at the panel as “a little Fresh Prince, a little Hitch, and a whole lot of attitude,” the site added. While they claimed Smith looked like himself, the actor confirmed in his Instagram post he will be blue.
