Will Smith and his family are mourning the loss of the actor’s father Willard Carroll Smith Sr. The sad news was confirmed by the Suicide Squad actor’s ex-wife Sheree Fletcher on Monday (Nov. 7).
The former Hollywood Exes star posted a throwback of Smith Sr. with his son and grandson Trey on Instagram, paying her respects. “We’re gonna miss you Daddio! You lived & played by your own rules…you truly were 1 of a kind! You instilled discipline and a work ethic that has created a legacy in your honor!” Fletcher was married to the actor from 1992-1995 and share one son, 23-year-old Trey.
Smith went on to marry Jada Pinkett in 1997 and have two children together, Jaden, 18 and Willow, 16. The family hasn’t publically commented on their loss. Smith Sr. was born and raised in Philadelphia’s Wynnefield area. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he worked as a refrigeration engineer and raised his four children with wife Caroline Bright. The two divorced in 2000.
In an interview with Essence, the 48-year-old reportedly credited his father as being a steady and positive figure in his life.
“Dad was tough but not tyrannical,” Smith said “He kept me in line. He’d get this look that said, ‘One more step, Will, and it’ll get ugly.’ He was an independent businessman — he set up refrigeration in supermarkets — and he always provided for us. He’s a steady and positive figure in my life.”
