Will Smith held back tears in a recent Instagram video detailing the relationship between him and his eldest son, Trey.
After spending the weekend at the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix, Smith took to Instagram to reveal a special moment he shared with his son at the three-day racing event.
“I usually take my kids separately on stuff so they have their individual daddy time,” he explained in a 46-second clip, flashing images of the two enjoying their time together. “So we’ve been doing this, me and him, hanging at the F1 and he just hit me with… ‘You know what dad? I just realized you’re not just my dad, I’m pretty sure you’re my best friend.'”
Visibly choked up, Smith put on his toughest mug before finishing with, “and I was like…yeah, man, prolly, prolly.”
According to Smith, he and Trey have had a rocky relationship since his split from his son’s mother, Sheree Zampino, in 1995.
“It has not always been like this between Trey & I. We STRUGGLED FOR YEARS after my Divorce from his Mother,” he wrote in the caption. “He felt betrayed & abandoned. It is a Wild Blessing to recover & restore a Loving Relationship with My Beautiful Son!”
