A young woman created a GoFundMe page after claiming she was kicked out of her house for being a “reformed Republican.” However, after the page disappeared, she admitted she made the whole thing up to scam the Republican party.
The young woman named Quran posted a photo of her in a “Make America Great Again” hat on Oct. 27, stating that she was no longer going to hide her support of Donald Trump. Not long after her photo gained steam, she wrote that she was kicked out of her parents’ house for her newfound support.
“Thank [sic] you all so much for your overwhelming support. After seeing this tweet my parents cut me off and refuse to pay my university tuition” Quran wrote. “So if you can find it in your hearts to help, this young black Republican pay for school it would be appreciated.” She then showed text messages believed to be between her and her mother about finding somewhere to live, and the difficulties of living on her own with only a part-time job.
Afterwards, she sent a GoFundMe link so that people could help her cause. However, days later, the page disappeared, and she wrote: “Hot take: stealing from republicans isn’t bad because republicans arent ppl.”
“Trump is a racist, homophobic, transphobic, bigot AND YOU THINK MY BLACK A** WOULD SUPPORT THAT ROTTING CARROT?? ridiculous,” she wrote. She also urged her followers to vote in the mid-term elections.
According to New York Magazine, Quran noted that she refunded the amount she received. Rumors spread that the young woman raised over $150,000.
“I just felt really weird about taking their money,” she told the publication. “This could go south really fast, I just decided to refund everyone and give their money back. I think it was like maybe $200 at that point…Yeah, I can’t pay for school but I don’t want Republican money to pay for it. I just want everyone to think I’m the finesse queen, which I am.” Her only regret? That she used a “better picture.”
