The controversy surrounding the Nina Simone biopic starring Zoe Saldana has reached a fever pitch. After premiering at the Cannes Film Festival nearly three years ago, and photos of the light-skinned Saldana wearing dark make-up, a prosthetic nose and a Afro surfaced online, many took to social media to voice their disapproval with the Cynthia Mort directed film before it was given a release date.
Now that Nina will hit theaters late April, the outrage has received new momentum. Saldana fully aware she’s the Internet’s latest target took to Twitter Wednesday (March 2) to respond to the negativity and criticism.
“I’ll tell you what freedom is to me- No Fear… I mean really, no fear.” #NinaSimone

Nina Simone’s estate swiftly responded and it wasn’t nice.
.@zoesaldana Cool story but please take Nina’s name out your mouth. For the rest of your life.
