In a piece for the New York Times entitled, “Coming Out as a Modern Family,” the essay finds the celebrated actress telling her young son that she was romantically involved with a woman he knew named Clare.
The revelation was prompted by her son innocently asking her if there was something she wasn’t telling him, leading to his becoming curious about her love life. “He was right; I was with someone romantically and I hadn’t told him. I had become involved with a woman who was my best friend, and, as it happens, a person who is like a godmother to my son,” Bello wrote in Friday’s edition. She reflected on the initial moment she realized that she had feelings for her best friend, while looking through photos and journals in her garden.
“We had an immediate connection but didn’t think of it as romantic or sexual,” admitting that it wasn’t love at first sight. “She was one of the most beautiful, charming, brilliant and funny people I had ever met, but it didn’t occur to me, until that soul-searching moment in my garden, that we could perhaps choose to love each other romantically.”
The Thank You for Smoking actress then realized how she felt, told her soon-to-be significant other and they “began the long, painful, wonderful process of trying to figure out what our relationship was supposed to be.”
Her son, Jackson, a product of her previous relationship with TV producer Dan McDermott, was the only concern she had when coming out about her sexuality. “He looked at me for what seemed like an eternity and then broke into a huge, warm smile. ‘Mom, love is love, whatever you are,’ he said with wisdom beyond his years,” she wrote.
